For more than 13 years, Rickey Paulding has played in the basketball Bundesliga for EWE Baskets Oldenburg. On Saturday evening, the American breaks a sporting sound barrier as only the second player. Mike Jackel’s top brand will probably remain unmatched forever.
The “historic moment” occurred at the beginning of the second half: The American Rickey Paulding converted a three-point throw and achieved points 6998, 6999 and 7000 in his long Bundesliga career. As the first player of his generation and only the second professional in the history of the basketball Bundesliga, the 38-year-old from EWE Baskets Oldenburg broke the sporting sound barrier of 7,000 points. Paulding contributed a total of 16 points to the 86: 69 victory against the Fraport Skyliners from Frankfurt on Saturday evening.
“I’m happy that I made it,” said Paulding at “MagentaSport”. “When my career is over, I can look back on it with pride.” His coach Mladen Drijencic also said after the game: It was a “historic moment for the club, for the team, for the league. I’m really happy that I was able to experience it and celebrate with a player like Rickey.”
In the BBL’s eternal scorer list, Paulding is still only in second place with 7003 points. Former German international Mike Jackel scored 10,789 points between 1982 and 1999 for clubs like Göttingen, Cologne and Bamberg. In order to overtake Jackel, Paulding would have to play another 278 Bundesliga games with his previous career average of 13.6 points per game. The media department of the BBL posted this invoice on its website.
Exceptionally long dwell time
However, the Detroit-born American’s career is impressive enough without this record. In 2007 Paulding switched to EWE Baskets after one season in Israel and two more years in France. For a US professional in German basketball, that’s an exceptionally long time spent at just one club. No player in the league currently plays longer for his club than Paulding.
At the beginning of this year, the American told the German Press Agency that he “did not expect it at all” when he came to Lower Saxony 13 years ago. “Our first child was on the road, so we wanted to stay in one place for a year or two. And then year after year came and the rest is history.” In 2009 Paulding became German champion with the Oldenburg team, in 2020 he improved the record as the best three-point shooter in the history of the BBL. On top of that, he is the foreign player with the most Bundesliga appearances (515).
