Smart devices can cause babies to talk late

Scientists of the University of Toronto announced the results of the recent studies about the effects of the smartphones on the children. They warned that late-talking problems may be seen in babies between 6 months and 2 years old who are playing with smartphones and tablets too much.

In a study presented at the 2017 Congress of the Academic Pediatrics Society in the USA, it was revealed that smartphones, tablets and electronic games could cause children to have troubles in expressing themselves.

Dr. Catherine Birken from the University of Toronto made a research  on the children of 900 families. They followed the period that the children passed with intelligent screens and the voices, words, and phrases that children could make in the same period. Every 30-minute increase in children’s daily use of smartphones has been shown to increase the risk of children gaining later voice and speech skills by 49 percent.

Dr. Birken stated in a press release that this is the first scientific study in this area and he added further research is needed to examine this work in the depths of its causes.

According to the scientists studying on this area, this problem mostly occur due to the fact that children pass the period they improve their speaking abilities with smartphones instead of communicating with their parents.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that babies must be kept away from the screen until they are 18 months. The same organization emphasizes that children between the ages of 18-24 months should only watch programs when they are with their parents’ side.
