There are a lot of ways to earn extra cash. In fact, there are more opportunities than ever before, thanks to the internet and the “sharing economy.” We’ve already written a little bit about services like Lyft and Uber, but there are some other ways to earn extra income that you may or may not have thought of.
First, you could rent your property.
If you have a spare room, consider renting it via Airbnb or a similar service. Supply and demand rules Airbnb pricing. Experts advise studying other listings in your area carefully, and to consider any extras or perks you could offer travelers that could help your room stand out from the crowd.
But you don’t have to be limited to renting a spare bedroom. If you have storage space, either indoor or outdoor, you could rent it as well. This industry isn’t as well-developed as Airbnb, but there are a number of websites that allow you to list your garage, driveway or other spare space as storage. Price the space at about half the rate of commercial storage companies in your area. Make sure your insurance policy will provide coverage for any of these uses.
It may sound unrealistic, but you can also rent your property to be used as a film location. Film crews seek locations worldwide, and while film centers like Los Angeles and New York are saturated with people offering to rent their home or property for a film crew, other areas of the country are not. You can list your property for free via several online film location rental services. The general rule for how much you can charge is one month’s mortgage or rent per day for a commercial film shoot. Negotiate with smaller filmmakers, and be aware that nearly all student films have budgets.
Second, you could rent yourself.
Be a model. Are we kidding? No. You don’t have to be 6′ tall and rail-thin to be a life model for art or photography classes. All types of life models are needed, and are paid $20 to $25 an hour, and sometimes more. You can be any shape or size, but be aware: many life modeling classes are intended to give students practice in drawing or photographic the human form, i.e. in the nude.
Be an extra in television or film shoots in your area. Similarly to renting your property for filming, you can become an extra in television or film productions. As with any performing arts-related job, extras can be union or non-union for various types of television or film productions. When starting out, you will be non-union, currently with starting pay about $10 an hour. However, with long shoots you can get overtime pay. Find out about opportunities through several different online extra casting sites.
If you can put one of these ideas to work for you, it might give you the cash you need to pay off your loans more quickly.
